World Education Day Theme Aligns with UNILORIN’s AI Vision – Egbewole

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has commended the theme of this year’s International Day of Education, which focuses on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, describing it as timely and reflective of global realities.

The annual event, marked on January 24, was themed “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.”

In a statement issued by the University’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, Prof. Egbewole noted that the theme aligns with the University’s ongoing efforts to integrate AI into its academic and research programmes.

“The University of Ilorin recognises the pivotal role education plays in preparing future leaders to navigate the evolving landscape,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

“Our commitment is to equip our students with the knowledge and skills needed to harness the potentials of AI for societal progress.”

Prof. Egbewole revealed that 21 students were recently trained on the application of Artificial Intelligence, with plans underway to sponsor 500 more in the near future.

He emphasized that such initiatives are aimed at equipping students with critical skills for innovation and career advancement.

Highlighting UNILORIN’s technological advancements, the Vice-Chancellor said the institution’s SMART Agenda prioritizes technology-driven teaching, learning, and research.

“We have made significant strides in Artificial Intelligence and invested heavily in digital infrastructure, including a state-of-the-art data centre and a robust network that supports online learning. Plans for establishing a Centre for Artificial Intelligence are at an advanced stage, with the Centre for Cybersecurity and COMSIT currently coordinating our AI efforts,” he added.

Prof. Egbewole affirmed that the University of Ilorin remains committed to fostering excellence in education and community development, ensuring it stays at the forefront of innovative research and learning.
