SOLID MINERALS: ESSENTIAL FOR AN ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION -MINISTRY RECEIVES DELEGATION FROM GHANA COLLEGE OF DEFENCE STUDIES

In order to achieve rapid socio-ecocomic growth, the Federal Government has reaffirmed its unwavering resolve to diversify the economy through the efficient and effective exploration and exploitation of its solid mineral resources.

The guests were told by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Yunnusa Muhammad, Director of the Artisanal and Small Scale Mining Department, that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu felt it was necessary to diversify the economy in accordance with its renewed hope agenda due to the declining revenue from a monolithic Nigerian economy.

He claims that this is done to boost the nation’s gross domestic product by bringing in more money for the government’s coffers through the solid mineral sector.

According to the Director, Nigeria has had a monolithic economy since the late 1950s. Economic diversification was deemed necessary by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. For the benefit of Nigerians, the solid minerals sector is now given top priority in order to achieve rapid socioeconomic development and prosperity.

He continued by expressing great optimism that their knowledge would be expanded by the interactive forum between the Ghana College of Defence Studies, under the direction of Brig-General Ntiri, and the management of Nigeria’s Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, which resulted from a presentation by Dr. Vivian Okono, Director of the Mining Environmental Compliance Department.

Speaking about global best practices in mining, Mr. Muhammad claimed that Nigeria could benefit from Ghana’s decades-long, incredibly rich experience, particularly in artisanal small mining.

The delegation leader, Brigadier-General Fred Ntiri, said in his remarks that the purpose of their visit to the Ministry was to gain firsthand knowledge of Nigeria’s solid minerals industry outside of the classroom. Their study visit had “Environment, Security & Development” as its central theme. He reaffirmed that the Ghana College of Defence Studies’ overarching goal is to implement policies that will raise Ghanaians’ standard of living.

Dr. Vivian Okono, Director of the Mines Environmental Compliance Department, gave a comprehensive presentation to the guests that covered the ministry’s organizational structure, the legal framework, the roles of various departments, agencies, and institutions, as well as upcoming government initiatives and opportunities.

It is also important to note that the interactive session that Dr. Okono’s presentation created broadened the visitors’ perspectives by providing insightful information about the Ministry’s initiatives and policies targeted at cleaning up the solid minerals sector of the economy. During the meeting, the Director of the Mines Inspectorate Department, Engineer Imam Ganiyu, along with other management personnel, made valuable contributions.
