Kwara NOA Marks World Human Rights Day, Sensitizes Citizens on Equity, Fairness

The Kwara State Directorate of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has joined the global community in commemorating World Human Rights Day, celebrated annually on December 10.

The event highlights the importance of protecting human rights as a cornerstone of democracy, in line with the United Nations’ Human Rights Convention.

Speaking at a sensitization program held in Ilorin, the Kwara State Director of NOA, Alhaji Dare Olurotimi Abduganiu, emphasized the agency’s commitment to promoting equity, fairness, and awareness of constitutional rights among Nigerians.

“Human rights protection is a basic necessity for good democracy. For our democracy to thrive, we must ensure equity and preach fairness,” Alhaji Abduganiu stated.

He noted that under the leadership of Mallam Lanre Isa Elelu, the agency has prioritized grassroots engagement by replicating human rights awareness activities across the 16 local government areas of Kwara State and the 774 local governments nationwide, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“The choice of a motor park as the venue for the sensitization program was strategic, aiming to reach a diverse audience, including workers, traders, travelers, and union members.” He said

Alhaji Abduganiu stressed the need for citizens to understand their rights and responsibilities. “We want everyone to know that their rights stop where others’ rights begin. As patriotic and law-abiding Nigerians, we must be equitable and fair in our interactions. The Nigerian Constitution of 1999 guarantees our rights to live and work anywhere, yet many remain unaware of this. That is why we are embarking on this campaign to publicize and disseminate this critical information,” he explained.

He further urged citizens to seek redress through appropriate channels if their rights are violated, rather than enduring in silence.

The agency’s campaign seeks to foster a more informed and inclusive society, ensuring that Nigeria becomes a safer and more prosperous nation. “These are the steps needed to build the Nigeria of our dreams,” Alhaji Abduganiu concluded.
