The Founder of OA Foundation, Mr. Olusegun Adeyemi, has urged Nigerian leaders to prioritize accountability while calling on citizens to actively participate in governance. Speaking on Radio Kwara’s Gbagede Oro on Thursday, February 20, 2025, the retired director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) emphasized that good governance is a shared responsibility between leaders and the people.
Adeyemi described leadership as a privilege that demands integrity and selflessness, warning that governance should not be about personal enrichment. “Leadership is not about personal gain but service to the people. Leaders must be accountable to the citizens they serve and ensure that their policies and actions reflect the needs and aspirations of the people,” he said.
He stressed the need for transparency, inclusivity, and strong institutions to fight corruption and inefficiency, noting that without these, national progress would be slow.
On civic responsibility, Adeyemi called on Nigerians to hold their leaders accountable through active engagement, such as voting, paying taxes, and supporting community development. “Good governance is a two-way street; it requires both responsible leadership and active citizenship,” he remarked.
He further emphasized the role of education and public awareness in shaping a responsible citizenry, urging civil society organizations, the media, and educational institutions to intensify efforts in educating people about their rights and responsibilities.
Listeners of Gbagede Oro commended Mr. Adeyemi’s insights, with many expressing the need for more discussions on governance and civic duties to enlighten the public on their role in nation-building.
