CHOLERA OUTBREAK: FG TASKS NIGERIANS ON PROPER HYGIENE, EMBARKS ON WATER QUALITY ANALYSIS

The Federal government of Nigeria, through its Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, has reportedly tasked Nigerians on proper hygiene, as it embarks on water quality analysis to combat current Cholera outbreak.

In furtherance of the government efforts in the fight against cholera in the country. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is assigned to delivering daily reports on cholera outbreak and response efforts, for the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, and report of the Ministry’s response efforts as the situation evolves.
30 persons are reportedly dead due to the cholera outbreak which attest to how critical the situation is. The Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation has reportedly sent a team from the National Water Quality Reference Laboratories in Lagos. Enugu and Sokoto State to collect water samples and investigate the presence causative organisms.( Vibro cholarae) affected areas.

This is caused by water borne deases that spread faster around the country. This is caused by a dirty and contaminated water. The primary reason of transmission is through the indigestion of contaminated water or food. This includes: Vomiting, profuse dehydration, and diarrhea (rice water stools) which can result to death if medical attention is not administered immediately. The Ministry through the Wash in Emergency Technical Working Group (WIETWG) is reaching out to the state urgently.

Technical working group and the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agencies (RUWASSAs) where applicable, to holistically address the cholera outbreak.

In the case of the outbreak, National Wash in Emergency Technical Working Group on preparedness, prevention, and response mechanism, as well as to promote the hygiene and water safety planning approached to respond and prevent cholera outbreak. These states have put more efforts to sensitise the communities to precautions on the cholera outbreak, to reduce the number of cholera cases.

They are promoting the campaign against open defecation, which is a way of transmitting the disease. The Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation urges all Nigerians to remain vigilant and take precautions to protect themselves and their families from the infection through the following measures:, Boil or treat drinking water before consumption. 2. Wash your hands with soap in running tap water regularly before eating and after using the toilet. 3. Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly with salt and clean water before eating.

The Ministry has urged the individual or persons experiencing any symptoms of cholera, to urgently seek the medical attention immediately.
