The Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Prof. Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman, has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for assenting to the North Central Development Commission (NCDC) Bill, describing it as a bold and visionary step towards inclusive governance and regional development.
In a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Mohammad Abdulkadri, on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, Prof. Sulaiman noted that the approval of the bill underscores President Tinubu’s commitment to equitable development and national unity.
He highlighted the North Central Region’s vital role in Nigeria’s political and economic stability, stressing that despite its contributions to national growth, the region has faced developmental challenges, including infrastructure deficits, security concerns, and economic setbacks. According to him, the establishment of the NCDC provides a structured and sustainable framework to tackle these issues and foster economic opportunities.
Prof. Sulaiman, a former Minister of National Planning, acknowledged the crucial roles played by the leadership of the National Assembly, particularly Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, in facilitating the bill’s passage.
He also commended Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazak, for his relentless advocacy and strategic efforts in ensuring the bill’s approval.
With the NCDC now a reality, Prof. Sulaiman called for its effective implementation, urging federal and state governments, traditional rulers, private sector stakeholders, and civil society organizations to collaborate in ensuring that the commission fulfills its mandate.
“This is a defining moment for the North Central Region, and I urge all stakeholders to embrace this opportunity to drive sustainable development for the benefit of our people,” he stated.
