The University of Ilorin Faculty of Agriculture Alumni Association has urged stakeholders to adopt sustainable strategies to address food insecurity in Nigeria.
The call was made by Dr. Augustina Opeewo-Ojo, Life President of the 1988 alumni set, during the Faculty’s maiden Alumni Day celebration held in Ilorin.
The event, themed “Setting the Pace for Alumni and Community Empowerment”, highlighted the need for innovative and sustainable agricultural practices to ensure food security, foster economic growth, and protect the environment.
Dr. Opeewo-Ojo, in her keynote address, stressed the pressing challenges posed by climate change, soil degradation, water scarcity, and unpredictable weather patterns. “Our growing global population demands higher food production, which has created issues such as resource depletion and the need for sustainability. As farmers’ leaders, researchers, and visionaries, these challenges demand that we transform how we think about and practice agriculture,” she said.
She also emphasized the role of technology and sustainable practices in revolutionizing agriculture. “Innovations such as precision farming with drones, genetically modified crops, and sustainable practices like organic farming, crop rotation, and agroforestry are promoting a balance between productivity and environmental health,” Opeewo-Ojo added.
The Alumni president encouraged members to utilize technological advancements to empower local farmers, improve agricultural practices, and address challenges in production, transportation, marketability, and storage.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Suleiman Ambali, commended the alumni for their support and contributions to the institution. He disclosed that the university has partnered with private agro-companies to develop 4,000 hectares of farmland, integrating student participation to enhance learning in modern farming techniques.
The Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Oluyemisi Fawole, welcomed participants and highlighted the faculty’s leadership role in advancing agriculture. “Let us take this opportunity to rekindle connections, share insights, and inspire one another to continue our journey toward excellence in agriculture,” she urged.
The event brought together experts, alumni, and students to deliberate on innovative solutions for the agricultural sector, aiming to improve livelihoods and achieve sustainability in Nigeria.
