Housing Minister Orders Immediate Investigation Into Collapse of Kano Building

Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, has expressed regret over the recent building collapse in Kano’s Noman’s Land Quarters and has directed a thorough investigation into the underlying cause of the regrettable event.

Remember how a two-story building at Noman’s Land Quarters in Kano State’s Fagge Local Government Area was said to have collapsed, trapping a large number of people inside?

Dangiwa, who gave the pertinent officials instructions to look into the Kano collapse as soon as possible, stated that the government will act decisively once the findings are presented.

Speaking out against the nation’s repeated building collapses, the Minister emphasized the necessity of completely implementing building codes and regulations as well as a system overhaul.

According to Dangiwa, the collapse of the Kano building is just another tragic event that highlights the building industry’s decay over time, which, if left unchecked, will continue to be disastrous for both the sector and society.

According to a National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) report, two people were found dead in the rubble, and two more had been sent to the hospital for medical attention.

As a result, Dangiwa urged state governments to take up the challenge and the pertinent organizations to act quickly to stop anything that could lead to the building collapsing.

The Minister emphasized that the federal government is dedicated to identifying the cause of the incident and bringing legal action against all those found guilty, recalling the most recent collapse of the Jos school building.

“I have got the Jos collapse investigation report, and we are compiling a list of all the professionals involved in the construction so we can take action,” he said.

With regard to the ministry’s work on a strong regulatory framework with pertinent industry stakeholders to enforce building codes throughout the nation in close coordination with the states, Arc Dangiwa gave his assurance that the government would take the necessary action to discourage others from endangering Nigerians through their careless and unprofessional actions.

“I beg the State governments to wake up and be more instrumental in curbing the excesses of quacks in the building construction industry, as they are in closer proximity to the people and directly oversee the land.” The Minister said

He clarified that the relevant agencies should check to see if all approvals were granted for all building categories and whether due diligence was followed in the issuance of the building permit. If any infractions were discovered during the process, he said, appropriate penalties had to be taken.

Additionally, the Minister counseled the builders to use only the best and most premium building materials and to stay true to the original structural plan.

He stated
We prayed for speedy recovery for those hospitalized and sent our condolences to the families of those whose lives were lost in the tragic incident.
