The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation declares that Dadin-Kowa Dam is safe and operational.

The Dadin-Kowa Dam in Gombe State is in good condition and is not in danger of losing its functionality, according to the public’s assurances from the Honorable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engineer Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev.

Prof. Utsev addressed recent concerns about the dam’s stability during an inspection visit to the facility today, along with the Honorable Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation, Rt. Hon. Bello Muhammad Goronyo, and a group of water experts.

In order to guarantee the dam’s continuous performance and safety, Prof. Utsev underlined that it is subject to stringent daily monitoring. He verified that all major infrastructure elements, such as the spillway and penstock, are working as planned and that the dam is producing hydropower, supporting irrigation, and supplying water.

The Minister reiterated in his speech the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation’s dedication to maintaining Nigeria’s water infrastructure. He reassured the public that the Ministry is committed to providing accurate and timely updates on all water infrastructure projects and that it will continue to strengthen its mandate of food production, job creation, and economic growth. He urged the public to disregard any false rumors regarding the dam’s condition.

Prof. Utsev also emphasized the benefits that the Dadin-Kowa Dam continues to provide the country’s irrigation, dam safety, and power generation through the Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMMING) Project and the upcoming Sustainable Power and Irrigation in Nigeria (SPIN) project.

The Honorable Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation, Rt. Hon. Bello Muhammad Goronyo, echoed the Minister’s remarks and emphasized the significance of precise information and professional consultation in halting the dissemination of false information.

The Minister restated the Ministry’s pledge to protect essential national resources in accordance with the administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Engr. Caleb Tyowuah, Acting Managing Director of the Upper Benue River Basin Development Authority, confirmed that the Dadin-Kowa Dam, with a live storage capacity of 1.77 million cubic meters, has no integrity issues and is successfully irrigating 2100 ha out of the planned 30,000 hectares of land, while also generating 40 megawatts of electricity.

The strong condition of the dam and its noteworthy contribution to the region’s power supply were also confirmed by Mr. Jayaharan Paul, Project Manager, Mabon Energy Limited, Dadin Kowa Hydro Power Plant.

The managing directors of River Basin Development Authorities, senior ministry representatives, technical engineers, water resources specialists, and the director general of NIHSA, Hon. Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, were present for the inspection tour.
