Iran strike triggers row with Iraq as fears of regional turmoil grow

On Tuesday, an Iranian missile strike on targets in northern Iraq sparked an unusual spat between the neighbours, with Tehran maintaining that the attack was meant to dissuade Israeli spies from posing threats and Baghdad recalling its ambassador in protest.

Late on Monday, Iranian media reported that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards had struck what they described as an Israeli espionage centre in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region of Iraq. The elite force also claimed to have struck the Islamic State in Syria.

Since the conflict between Israel and Hamas began on October 7 and Iran’s allies entered the fray from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen, the strike looked likely to increase concerns about escalating instability throughout the Middle East.

Another worry following a string of U.S. strikes on militant groups with ties to Iran and members of Iraq’s official security forces is that Iraq might once more turn into a theatre for regional conflict. These attacks were a reaction to the numerous assaults on American forces in the area that have been going on since October 7.
